NZS 8510 methamphetamine testing standard is under review
Standards New Zealand is currently consulting on DZ 8510:2026, the proposed revision of NZS 8510:2017 – Testing and decontamination of methamphetamine-contaminated properties.
The review comes during an important period for New Zealand property owners, landlords, property managers, insurers and methamphetamine testing professionals, following regulatory changes introduced during 2026.
Importantly, DZ 8510:2026 is currently a draft Standard under consultation. It should not be described as a final or adopted replacement for NZS 8510:2017.
Why does the review matter?
Methamphetamine testing results can influence major decisions involving:
- Property purchases
- Rental properties
- Tenancy changes
- Insurance claims
- Decontamination decisions
- Property management
- Remediation costs
- Legal disputes
For that reason, sampling methodology and interpretation of laboratory results need to be scientifically robust, practical and representative of the actual condition of the property.
EnviroCheck welcomes the review and believes it is important that the revised Standard continues to examine areas including:
- Sampling integrity
- Representative sampling
- Surface sampling methodology
- Interpretation of laboratory results
- Sampling from different surface types
- The effect sampling techniques can have on painted or coated surfaces
- Avoiding unnecessary damage to property surfaces
- Clear reporting that assists property owners and other decision-makers
EnviroCheck's position
EnviroCheck founder Todd Sheppard says:
“Any revised Standard needs to give property owners, tenants, property managers, insurers and other decision-makers confidence that testing is scientifically robust, practical and representative of the actual condition of a property.”
EnviroCheck has been involved in methamphetamine surface testing in New Zealand for many years and continues to support testing practices that are based on sound science, appropriate laboratory analysis and transparent reporting.
The review of NZS 8510 provides an important opportunity for industry participants to consider whether current sampling and reporting practices remain appropriate and whether improvements can be made.
What happens next?
Standards New Zealand is currently seeking feedback on the proposed revision.
EnviroCheck will continue to follow the review closely and intends to contribute practical industry experience to the consultation process.
