Field Alert: Needles & Syringes
Needles and syringes are being increasingly observed during property assessments across New Zealand. If encountered during inspections:
- Do not touch or attempt to handle — contact local authorities immediately
- Photograph location and surroundings for documentation
- Restrict access to the affected area until professional guidance is received
- Document the date, time, and specific location of the discovery
Proactive Access Control: Ceiling Cavity Restriction
Limiting access to ceiling cavities is a general best practice that protects property occupants. If contamination is later discovered, restricted access helps contain exposure to the affected area:
- Restrict access to ceiling cavities using lock-out tags on hatches and access points
- Prevent unauthorised entry to cavities by securing hatches and openings
- If contamination is discovered, restricted access limits exposure to that specific area
- Document all access restrictions with dates and photographs
- Brief occupants and maintenance staff on cavity access restrictions and the reasons for them
