Motorhome & Campervan Meth Testing

Independent interior surface testing for motorhomes, campervans and RVs — including pre-purchase checks on ex-rental vehicles. An NZQA-qualified assessor attends the vehicle, samples the surfaces occupants live and sleep against, and the samples are analysed by an IANZ-accredited laboratory.

From $249 + GST per vehicle · laboratory results typically within 24–48 hours

The Risk

A Motorhome Is a Small Living Space, Not Just a Vehicle

People sleep, eat and spend whole evenings inside a motorhome or campervan. That makes it closer to a small dwelling than to a car — and residue from smoking can concentrate on the same kinds of surfaces our property assessors test: bench tops, seating, bedding surrounds and ventilation outlets.

For a buyer, the important part is timing. Once the vehicle is yours, any contamination present at the point of sale is yours to deal with. A pre-purchase inspection gives you a laboratory record while the decision is still open.

Sampling Scope

What We Sample in a Motorhome or Campervan

Sampling is non-destructive: surface wipes only, nothing removed and nothing marked. The sample plan covers the cab and the habitation area, because a motorhome has two distinct interiors and residue does not respect the divide.

Cab: steering wheel, column, driver and passenger seat surfaces
Cab: dashboard, centre console, door panels and interior handles
Habitation area: dinette seating, table edge and bench surfaces
Galley: bench tops, sink surround and fridge handles
Sleeping areas: bed surrounds, mattress edges and overhead locker handles
Ventilation outlets and air-conditioning intake
Ex-Rental Stock

Former Rental Campervans and Motorhomes

A large share of the second-hand motorhome market is ex-rental. That is not a warning in itself — rental operators generally maintain vehicles well — but it does mean the vehicle has carried a long sequence of unknown occupants, each in a confined living space.

If you are buying from a rental disposal yard, a dealer or a private seller, test before the money moves. If you are selling or trading ex-fleet stock, an independent report answers the question a buyer will ask anyway.

What you receive

  • An IANZ-accredited laboratory report, not a field-only reading
  • Results per sampled surface in µg/100 cm²
  • The sample locations and method recorded in the report
  • Plain-language explanation of what the result does and does not establish

Testing and MethShield Auto™ Are Different Things

A test tells you what is in the vehicle now. MethShield Auto is a monitoring and visible-deterrence programme for a vehicle you already own or operate — it is not a test and produces no laboratory result. Many owners start with a test and then protect the vehicle they have confirmed is clean.

Motorhome & Campervan Testing — Common Questions

Do you test motorhomes and campervans for methamphetamine?

Yes. Motorhomes, campervans and RVs are tested using the same surface-wipe method we use for cars and trucks: an assessor attends the vehicle, samples the interior surfaces occupants touch and sleep against, and the samples are analysed by an IANZ-accredited laboratory. Testing starts from $249 + GST per vehicle.

Should I test an ex-rental campervan before buying it?

An ex-rental campervan has carried a long list of unknown occupants, often in a confined living space where people sleep, cook and eat. A pre-purchase test documents the interior residue status before you commit. It is evidence about the vehicle's past — not a warranty, and not a statement that the vehicle is safe or unsafe to occupy.

How long does motorhome testing take, and how soon do I get results?

The on-site inspection usually takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on vehicle size. Laboratory results are typically available within 24 to 48 hours after the samples reach the laboratory. We do not promise same-day results.

Do you test caravans?

Caravan coverage is confirmed case by case depending on the unit, its location and access. Send us the details and we will tell you whether we can test it rather than assume we can.

Is a test the same as MethShield Auto?

No. A test produces a laboratory result describing the vehicle's interior as it is today. MethShield Auto is a monitoring and visible-deterrence programme for a vehicle you own or operate; it is not a test and does not produce a laboratory result. They answer different questions, and we keep them separate on purpose.
