Toxicology Test Prices

What a meth toxicology test costs in New Zealand, what is included in the price, and what drives it — from $249 + GST for a baseline screening assessment through to detailed laboratory assessment for tribunal and insurance use.

NZQA Certified Samplers

Surface-residue sampling carried out by certified samplers holding NZQA Unit Standards 30892, 30893 & 30894.

A toxicology test price in New Zealand reflects three things: the sampling that happens at the property, the laboratory analysis of those samples, and the report you receive. EnviroCheck's assessments start from $249 + GST for a Baseline Screening Assessment. Beyond that, the price tracks the level of certainty your decision requires — a screening check is priced differently from the discrete, room-by-room analysis a tribunal or insurance matter needs. This page sets out the levels, what each one includes, and what moves the final figure. For what the resulting document contains, see our meth toxicology reports guide.

Toxicology Test Prices by Assessment Level

Baseline Screening Assessment

from $249 + GST

Surface wipe samples combined into a laboratory composite analysis. The affordable starting point for a pre-tenancy baseline, a routine check, or an initial property screen. It confirms whether contamination is present — but because the samples are combined, it does not identify which surface carries it.

Enhanced Screening

quoted per property

More samples across more surfaces, giving wider coverage and greater confidence. Recommended where risk indicators are present, where a previous result needs clarifying, or where the property has a complex occupancy history.

Detailed Assessment

quoted per property

Discrete individual samples analysed separately using NIOSH Method 9111, producing room-by-room and surface-by-surface concentrations. This is the level required for Tenancy Tribunal matters, insurance claims, and scoping decontamination where contamination is confirmed.

For a full description of each level, see our meth testing services page. If you are weighing screening against discrete sampling, our composite meth testing guide explains exactly what changes between the two.

What the Price Includes

  • On-site sampling by a qualified EnviroCheck assessor, using NZS 8510:2017 methodology and documented sample locations.
  • IANZ-accredited laboratory analysis of every sample collected, reporting concentrations in µg/100 cm².
  • The written toxicology report — included with every assessment, not charged separately. It records what was tested, where, and what the laboratory found.
  • Independent interpretation of the result against the applicable threshold, so you know what the number means for your situation.

What Affects the Price of a Toxicology Test

  • Assessment level — composite screening is less expensive than discrete, individually analysed samples.
  • Property size — larger properties need more samples to achieve meaningful coverage.
  • Rooms and surfaces sampled — more sample locations means more laboratory work.
  • Location and travel — rural and remote properties may carry a travel component, confirmed before booking.
  • Purpose of the test — a clearance re-test after decontamination targets specific surfaces and may differ from a standard assessment in scope.

Toxicology Test Prices Against the Cost of Contamination

Methamphetamine decontamination in New Zealand commonly runs from $15,000 to $30,000, and can be considerably higher where contamination is widespread — before any consideration of lost rent, remediation downtime, or a failed settlement. Against that, a screening assessment from $249 + GST is a small outlay for factual information at the point a decision is being made. For what remediation involves, see our decontamination guide.

Cheaper Options and What They Cannot Do

DIY test kits, and "free" screening offers that exist to sell decontamination work, both have the same limitation: the result is not independent laboratory evidence. A DIY kit does not follow NZS 8510:2017 methodology or give a quantified laboratory concentration. A testing company that also performs remediation has a commercial interest in the result it reports. EnviroCheck tests and advises only — we do not remediate — so the price you pay buys an assessment that answers to your decision. Our DIY vs laboratory comparison sets out the difference in detail.

Getting an Exact Price for Your Property

There is no single national price for a toxicology test, because no two properties are the same size or need the same level of analysis. To get a figure you can rely on, tell us:

  • The property address and approximate size, including the number of bedrooms.
  • The purpose of the test — pre-tenancy baseline, pre-purchase, end-of-tenancy, tribunal evidence, insurance claim, or post-remediation clearance.
  • Whether the property is a rental, owner-occupied, short-stay, or commercial premises.
  • Your timeframe, particularly for pre-settlement or end-of-tenancy deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a toxicology test cost in New Zealand?

A meth toxicology test starts from $249 + GST for a Baseline Screening Assessment — surface wipe sampling by a qualified assessor, laboratory composite analysis, and a written report. Enhanced Screening and Detailed Assessments cost more because each sample is analysed individually, which produces room-by-room and surface-by-surface results. The exact price depends on the size of the property, the number of samples and the assessment level required.

Is the toxicology report included in the testing price?

Yes. Every EnviroCheck assessment includes the written report — there is no separate charge for documentation. The report records what was sampled, where, and the laboratory concentration for each sample or composite, making it suitable for pre-purchase due diligence, tenancy matters and insurance purposes.

Why does a detailed assessment cost more?

A screening test combines samples from several surfaces into one laboratory analysis, which keeps costs down but does not identify which surface is contaminated. A Detailed Assessment using NIOSH Method 9111 is analysed as discrete individual samples, so laboratory work scales with the number of samples rather than the number of composites. That added analysis is what produces the location-specific evidence required for Tenancy Tribunal matters, insurance claims and remediation scoping.

Are DIY meth test kits a cheaper option?

DIY kits cost less upfront, but their results are not accepted for insurance, tribunal or property transaction purposes. They do not follow NZS 8510:2017 methodology, are not analysed by an accredited laboratory, and cannot establish the level or location of contamination. Where the result has to stand up to someone else's scrutiny, professional laboratory testing is the only defensible option.

Does the price change depending on the region or property type?

The methodology and laboratory analysis are the same nationwide, and rentals are priced the same as owner-occupied properties. What changes the price is the property itself — its size, the number of rooms and surfaces sampled, the assessment level, and travel requirements for rural or remote locations. EnviroCheck will confirm any travel component before booking.

Can I get a fixed price before booking?

Yes. Tell EnviroCheck the property address, the approximate size of the property, and the purpose of the test — a pre-tenancy baseline, a pre-purchase check, a tribunal matter or an insurance claim. We will confirm the scope and give you a tailored quote before any testing is booked. Call 0800 564 564 to discuss your property.
