NZQA Certified Samplers
Surface-residue sampling carried out by certified samplers holding NZQA Unit Standards 30892, 30893 & 30894.
Meth testing NZ-wide means one thing in practice: a trained assessor collects surface wipe samples from your property, an accredited laboratory analyses them for methamphetamine residue, and you receive a documented report that stands up to scrutiny. EnviroCheck has provided independent meth testing in New Zealand since 2011, following NZS 8510:2017 methodology and using IANZ-accredited laboratory analysis. Testing starts from $249 + GST, with nationwide coverage from Northland to Southland. For the full range of services, see our meth testing services page, or read about property meth testing if you are testing a house, rental, or investment property.
What Meth Testing in New Zealand Involves
Methamphetamine residue settles on surfaces — walls, ceilings, benchtops, joinery, appliances and soft furnishings. It is invisible, and it does not fade with time. Detection requires sampling specific surface areas to a defined size, laboratory extraction, and instrumental analysis to quantify the residue in micrograms per 100 square centimetres.
The New Zealand process has three parts:
- Sampling on site — an EnviroCheck assessor collects surface wipe samples using NZS 8510:2017 methodology, documenting sample locations so the result is traceable to a specific surface.
- Laboratory analysis — samples are analysed at an IANZ-accredited laboratory, which reports the concentration of methamphetamine residue for each sample or composite.
- Documented reporting — you receive a written report recording what was tested, where, and what the laboratory found. That document is what insurers, the Tenancy Tribunal and property buyers rely on.

The Standard and the Regulations Behind NZ Meth Testing
Two frameworks govern meth testing in New Zealand. NZS 8510:2017 sets out how methamphetamine contamination is assessed, sampled and reported for non-rental situations — sale and purchase, insurance, remediation scoping and vehicles. The Residential Tenancies (Managing Methamphetamine Contamination) Regulations 2026, in force from 16 April 2026, set the thresholds that apply to rental properties under the Residential Tenancies Act.
15µg/100 cm²
Contaminated (rental)
Above 15 µg/100 cm² a rental property is considered contaminated and landlord obligations are triggered.
30µg/100 cm²
Uninhabitable (rental)
Above 30 µg/100 cm² tenants cannot lawfully occupy the property until remediation and retesting complete.
For the full detail, see our meth contamination thresholds guide and the 2026 disclosure guidance.

Levels of Meth Testing Available in NZ
- Baseline Screening — from $249 + GST. Composite sampling with laboratory analysis. An affordable starting point for pre-tenancy baselines, routine checks and initial screening. It tells you whether contamination is present, not which surface carries it.
- Enhanced Screening. Additional samples and greater coverage, recommended where risk indicators exist or a previous result needs clarification.
- Detailed Assessment. Discrete individual samples analysed separately, using NIOSH Method 9111, giving room-by-room results. This is the level required for Tenancy Tribunal matters, insurance claims and remediation scoping.
Who Uses Meth Testing in New Zealand
- Home buyers — pre-purchase meth testing before a condition period expires, so contamination does not become yours at settlement.
- Landlords — pre-tenancy baselines and exit screens that create the documented record a dispute needs. See rental property meth testing.
- Property managers — systematic testing across a portfolio, with evidence retained per property.
- Sellers and vendors — pre-sale screening that answers the question before a buyer asks it.
- Insurers and advisers — independent reports used in claims and report reviews. See insurance report reviews.
- Businesses and fleets — vehicle meth testing for work vehicles, campervans and company fleets.
